When I moved to Loudoun County, Virginia, in 2013, I set about looking for a writing community, and my search led me to Lisa Colburn and Market Street Writers. Trained in the Amherst Writers and Artists method, Lisa gathers writers of all experience levels together to create in community. Writing in the company of others, encouraged by Lisa’s graceful facilitation, helped me develop my voice as a writer and inspired me to experiment and branch out. Inevitably, I’d come away from those mornings in Lisa’s cozy living room with ideas for stories or poems to develop later. After leading workshops and retreats for more than a decade, she drew on her career in publishing to bring forth an anthology featuring the works of women whom she’d welcomed into her home over the years. Lisa was kind enough to give a home to two of my poems: "This Poem" and "When I Am Old and Inconvenient." We celebrated the publication of Unfolding on October 27 with readings and a launch party at Birch Tree Books in Leesburg. Order it from your favorite bookseller and check out Lisa’s workshops (she offers both in-person and virtual writing circles): www.marketstreetwriters.com.
